Background of the Study
Gender has long been a focal point in healthcare studies, influencing both the delivery and reception of care in various healthcare settings. In psychiatric nursing, gender roles and expectations can affect how care is provided and how nurses interact with patients. The way psychiatric nurses approach treatment, communication, and therapeutic interventions may be shaped by their gender, as well as by societal and cultural norms related to masculinity and femininity (Bassey et al., 2024).
At Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Calabar, Cross River State, psychiatric nurses encounter patients with diverse mental health conditions, including severe mood disorders, schizophrenia, and anxiety disorders. The influence of gender on their practices may manifest in various forms, such as differences in patient interaction, empathy, care techniques, and professional relationships. However, little research has been conducted in this setting to explore how gender impacts nursing practices and patient outcomes.
Statement of the Problem
Although the influence of gender on healthcare provision is well-documented in some areas, its specific impact on psychiatric nursing practices remains underexplored in Nigeria. At Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Calabar, nurses, especially those in psychiatric care, may face unique challenges influenced by their gender. These challenges may affect their professional dynamics, interaction with patients, and ultimately, the quality of care provided.
There is a lack of empirical evidence examining how gender influences psychiatric nursing practices in Calabar. This study seeks to address this gap by investigating the effects of gender on psychiatric nursing practices, with the goal of improving care delivery and fostering gender-sensitive approaches in psychiatric settings.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the influence of gender on psychiatric nurses' interactions with patients.
2. To assess the impact of gender on treatment approaches and care delivery.
3. To identify any gender-related challenges faced by psychiatric nurses in their daily practice.
Research Questions
1. How does gender influence the interactions between psychiatric nurses and patients?
2. What is the impact of gender on the treatment approaches and nursing practices at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Calabar?
3. What gender-related challenges do psychiatric nurses face in providing care?
Research Hypotheses
1. Gender influences psychiatric nurses' interactions with patients.
2. Gender affects the treatment approaches and care delivery in psychiatric nursing.
3. Gender-related challenges are prevalent in psychiatric nursing practices.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on psychiatric nurses at Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Calabar, and will explore how their gender influences their practices. The study will collect data through interviews, surveys, and observational assessments between 2023 and 2025. Limitations include the potential for bias due to social expectations of gender roles and the subjectivity of self-reported experiences.
